Grumman’s F-14 Tomcat is a two-seat, twin-engine, variable-sweep-wing supersonic fighter. It first flew on December 21, 1970. The F-14 is the U.S. Navy’s workhorse carrier-based air superiority fighter and has been the fleet’s most important air defense interception and tactical reconnaissance platform from 1976 to 2006. It was later equipped with the Blue Shield night infrared navigation targeting pod for low-altitude attack missions. The F-14 was developed to replace the discontinued F-111B, making the first American “10” series fighter designed to incorporate a lot of experience fighting MiGs during the Vietnam War.
The F-14 first entered service aboard the USS Enterprise in 1974 to replace the F-4 Phantom II fighter.
