This hollow stainless steel shaft is ground but not tempered, so its hardness and wear resistance is much lower than a tempered or coated shaft.

It is especially suitable on the front or rear axle due to its low weight but if you use it at the rear, in a brass bearing or similar, it is very important to lubricate it generously to, logically, minimize friction and wear.
