Already after the first year of the war, the German Air Force leadership had to realize that the Junkers Ju 87B no longer met the requirements in many areas. The ever-increasing ground defense and the use of fighter aircraft during the war led to a task restructuring of the Ju 87 as a fighter pilot. The D version received a more powerful engine, a new aerodynamic fairing and stronger armor. Their new task was now primarily the ground combat mission, which also included the tank fight by means of a cannon caliber 3.7 cm. In the spring of 1944, work began on the Ju 87D-3 to G-1 and G-2 tank destroyers.
