F-86F Sabre
The F-86 Sabre single-engine jet fighter was developed by the US North American Aviation Company in the late 40s and became a symbol of post-war military aviation. The fighter was characterized by the adoption of the typical arrow wing, for the large front air intake and for the use of the General-Electric J47 jet engine. Its flight qualities in terms of speed and performance were optimal for the time and very different from those of fighters with the traditional piston engine. It was armed with 6 Browning M3 12.7 mm caliber machine guns installed in the muzzle. It was widely used by the U.S.A.F. and actively participated in the Korean War where it confronted directly with the Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig-15 fighter giving life to the first “dogfights” between jet aircraft in the history of aeronautics. The F-86 proved to be extremely effective, and many pilots were distinguished by shooting down a large number of enemy aircraft and obtaining the qualification of “ace”.
