Caproni Ca.311/311M
The Ca.311 was conceived as a reconnaissance aircraft capable of carrying out missions also as a light bomber or “stormtrooper”. The Officine Caproni realized their Ca. 310, later evolved into Ca.311; aircraft with elegant lines, able to fly at least 220 knots (400 km / h) and characterized by an almost completely glazed nose for excellent observation on the ground. Its armament consisted of three machine guns of 7.7 mm caliber, one in the ventral position, one in the rotating turret of the Lanciani type in the dorsal position and one positioned on the left wing, shortly after the wing root. The aircraft was also capable of carrying up to 400 kilograms of bombs, in a special compartment in the fuselage. The Ca.311 flew, starting from 1940, on all fronts: from North Africa, to the Balkans to Russia recording – despite the reduced defensive armament and a limited power of the engines – also the approval of the crews for its handling and its reliability. Numerous examples would remain in service until 1945, both with the Regia Aeronautica cobelligerante in the South, and with the National Republican Air Force in the north.
