Dakota Mk.III
The Douglas DC-3 twin-twin was certainly one of the most famous transport aircraft in aviation history due to its reliability, flexibility and operational life. During World War II, a version dedicated to military uses was developed: the Douglas C-47 Skytrain. Produced in large numbers by American factories, it was used extensively on all fronts and by all Allied armies. In particular, the C-47As used by the British Royal Air Force and Commonwealth troops were renamed “Dakota” and were used for logistics, tactical transport, parachute launch, and evacuation of wounded. The two Pratt & Whitney 1,200 horsepower engines were capable of reaching the “Dakota” top speed of 360 km/h and carrying a load of more than 2,500 kg.
